Thursday, January 31st, 2008
In Black August, Gary plays convict and prison activist George L. Jackson. Jackson was convicted stealing $70.00 from a gas station. The crime earned him one year in prison.
Black August revolves around the last 14 months of Jackson’s life, 11 years of which had been spent in incarceration. It chronicles Jackson’s underground efforts to compile his letters describing the inhuman and decrepit conditions he was living in. His collection of letters eventually evolved into the New York Times bestseller, Soledad Brothers.
During his incarceration, Jackson is charged with killing a guard “in retaliation for the shooting deaths of three black inmates at Soledad State Prison in California.” Ezra Stanley plays Gary’s 17 year-old brother who takes hostages in an attempt to secure his brother’s release. They younger Jackson eventually dies as a result of his action.
The movie hits video store shelves on February 19th. With a running time of 100 minutes, Black August the DVD will retail for $19.97. The film is part of the American Black Film Festival DVD series.
Hopefully more CSI stars will hit the shelves during the strike.
