Abestos Found in CSI Fingerprint Kit Toy
Asbestos has been found in the very popular CSI Fingerprint Examination Kit. The harmful chemical was actually found by a watch dog group made up of asbestos victims. The kit, which is made in China, contains a fingerprint brush, dusting powder, flap lifters, in two fingerprint stamps, stencil, fingerprint card, alternative light source, ink pad, marker, CSI notebook and magnification glass.
The victim’s group found significant levels of asbestos two of the kit’s powders.
Physicians are especially concerned because of the significant likelihood of children breathing in asbestos fibers as they hunt for fingerprints and use a soft-bristled brush to move the powder around.
CBS responded quickly to the situation. A CBS spokesperson issued the following state, “We’ve asked our licensee to immediately conduct an independent test in the U.S. for asbestos. If the toy is determined to be unsafe, then we will insist that the licensee remove it from the market.”
Planet Toys, the manufacturer and distributor of the kit, issued an email saying that the kit had met all safety standards. A spokesperson later added, “We respect anyone’s right to test our products and should their or our future tests reveal anything unacceptable, we’ll of course take swift action to remove contaminated products from the market.”
The products tested were purchased from various national retail chains, including Wal-Mart, Costco, Toys “R” Us, Macy’s and CVS.
The fingerprint kit contained over 5 percent asbestos which would be banned under a recent bill passed by the United State Senate.
The toy which retails for approximately $18 currently ranks #29,310 in Amazon’s Toys & Games section. Only three are currently available at the popular online shopping site.
